Domaine A
Pinot noir 2019
For this release, we’ve again chosen to bottle half under cork and half under Stelvin closures, in an effort to extend Domaine A’s legendary cellaring potential. Already at release, subtle differences are emerging: the Stelvin shows brighter, fresher fruit and a slightly longer finish, while the cork offers more earthiness and savoury complexity.
Stelvin
Deep crimson in the glass, the nose opens with cherry coulis, cinnamon, liquorice and quince paste, with subtle notes of leather and eucalypt emerging with time. The palate is vibrant and fruit-driven, showing bright red cherry, crunchy acidity and layers of mulberry jam, strawberry coulis, darker black fruits and hints of Christmas pudding spice. Fresher and brighter than its cork counterpart, it carries a slightly longer finish and a firm tannin structure that benefits from decanting to reveal further depth. An excellent partner for robust dishes, and a rewarding bottle for cellar enthusiasts.
Cork
Mingled with liquorice, allspice and gentle eucalypt notes. On the palate it is seamless and composed, with juicy fruit balanced by intriguing earthiness and dried herbs. Delicate, well-integrated acidity and fine tannins contribute to its savoury profile. The finish is satisfying, if fractionally shorter than the Stelvin, emphasising the wine’s forest floor character.

Winemaker Notes
Our A block was planted with later ripening clones in the dryest corner of the vineyard and as such will always show power, concentration and weight. However, we have sought to harness more of the fruit weight than tannin and to time picking to preserve acidity to help balance that power. This first release of Domaine A Pinot noir next generation shows a more pared back style that I favour—more fresh fruit and restraint compared to the largess of Peter’s style. Being more vibrant in both fruit and balance I think the wine has gained many years more drinkability without sacrificing concentration of flavours.
